Identify Your Family Photos

Send the Photo Detective your mystery photograph(s) and she’ll estimate the cost for identifying and analyzing its clues. Here’s how:

  • Scan the pictures in JPG format with a resolution of 300 dpi or photograph the image using a digital camera.
  • If there is writing or printing on the back, please send a scan of it as well.
  • Upload each photo separately with the following information:
    1. Your name and email address.
    2. Any information you have about the image.
    3. Your specific question about the picture.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: But, I don’t own a scanner or digital camera!
A: Don’t worry. If scanning is a problem, you can mail a photographic copy (please do not send originals!) to:

Maureen Taylor
The Photo Detective
P.O. Box 283
Westwood, MA 02090.

If there is information on the back of the picture such as a photographer's name, please copy the reverse as well.

Q: What’s a photographic copy?
A: A photographic copy is a real photograph, not a photocopy. There are several ways to obtain one. Ask a photo lab in your area to make a color print of the image. A color copy is necessary to fully identify the photograph. Or make these copies yourself using a Picture Kiosk, which can be found in photo specialty outlets, supermarkets, drug stores, and other mass merchandise stores across the U.S. Find the location of a Kodak kiosk nearest you at the Kodak website..

Q: How much will it cost?
A: It depends on the pictures and how many you send. I will provide a written estimate of time and costs to research your photographs. A 50 percent deposit is required to begin the work.

Q: Is there anything else I need to send?
A: Once I’ve received your deposit and pictures I may also need some additional genealogical information.
